"Sport has always played an important role in my life - first as a way to get fit and be healthy and then slowly it changed until I found that I wanted to compete against other people and my own bests. It has taught me to plan, set goals, deal with disappointment and push myself to the limits I never thought were possible, but most importantly I love what I do."
Tanni Grey-Thompson, Athlete and Swansea University Honarary Fellow
Sport is a major part of student life at Swansea. We have invested heavily over the last few years to provide all students with access to first-class facilities and our location is a major attraction to students interested in an active outdoor lifestyle.
Our Athletic Union (AU) clubs have a proud tradition of excellence in competitive sport with football, rugby, hockey, surfing, swimming and triathlon all leading sports.
The University has helped launch a number of outstanding sporting careers. A large number of former students have gone on to play international rugby for Wales, England and the British Lions, including Paul Thorburn, Robert Howley, and current stars Dwayne Peel, Stephen Jones and Jonathan Thomas.
The Sports Village has attracted elite athletes, swimmers and triathletes who trained rigourously in preparation for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Participation in AU clubs is not just for the elite. Both rugby and football have five teams each; just imagine the social events! There are over 20 fitness classes a week including boxercise, yoga, and circuit training. If you want to take part, you will find something at Swansea to suit you.
The outstanding natural environment means you can sail in Swansea Bay, or row on the River Tawe. Surfing, windsurfing and canoeing conditions on Gower beaches are simply excellent. Mountain biking and cycling are also popular across rugged hills for experts or flat cycle paths for beginners.
In April 2006, Swansea hosted the British University Games, a 4 day festival of sport featuring the UK's top student athletes in a range of sports. Our Facilities are widely used by professional teams for training camps. Past visitors have included New Zealand Rugby Union, Welsh Rugby Union, Leinster RFC, Harlequins RFC, Turkish FA, Welsh FA and the English FA.
