“Swansea offers the benefits of city and country; the main campus is backed by parkland and looks out over the sea, while the attractions of Wales’ second biggest city are a couple of miles away..."
The Guardian University Guide
“With its parkland setting, wide views, clean, clear lines and a sense of energy generated by sea air and by a friendly, busy student community happily housed, Swansea has good cause to count its blessings.
The Potter Guide to Higher Education in UK
Universities & Colleges 2002/03
Founded in 1920, Swansea University has a long history of academic success, and a modern approach to study. Our parkland campus has a spectacular seafront location and can boast the fact that we are the closest University to the beach in the world. What first strikes visitors to the University is the approach to the campus along the Mumbles Road, with stunning views across Swansea Bay, the headline of Mumbles and out to sea across the Bristol Channel to Ilfracombe.
We like to give our students a choice. With a wide range of schemes including Joint Honours combinations on offer, many of our students have the opportunity to try out subjects that are new to them. Study should be about experimenting and exploring - this is the outlook we encourage. We have a wide prospectus with strong undergraduate and postgraduate options.
"As winner of the Times Higher Award 2005 for the best student experience we are proud of our vibrant campus environment, of our beach-front location and of our home city."
Prof. Richard Davies, Vice Chancellor
The University has over 15,000 students. That means that we are substantial enough in size to have excellent facilities, but small enough to retain our community feeling. Having a compact self contained campus helps. With departments and schools, libraries, the Union, restaurants, cafes, shops, accommodation, bars, a bank, a hairdresser and a cinema all on-site, you’ll find everything you need is in one convenient location and within walking distance from one another.
"There is one simple reason why Swansea University has won the Times Higher Award 2005 for the best student experience • we have more to offer students than anywhere else. From its beautiful location to the high quality of teaching, the diverse range of people to a great social scene, Swansea has it all."
Becky McKinlay,
Student Union President 2005/06
From the campus you can travel along the front to the Marina or the city centre, or the vibrant village of mumbles. Regular bus services run to the Student Village and to popular student areas such as Uplands, Brynmill and Uplands.
Swansea University has also recently benefited from a huge initiative to update the sports facilities. Just a two minute walk from the campus is the new Sketty Lane Sports Village which has amongst the best sporting facilities in the country.
Swansea is easily accessible through any form of transport. By road the M4 provides a easy way into the city. Cardiff airport is less than an hours bus journey from the University. There is also the Swansea Cork ferry which means Swansea is accessable to all but can also provide a base for exploration.
