I play Hockey for enjoyment and because I succeed at it. It keeps me fit and I am pushing myself to achieve more with my team.
There is also a great social side to it. The other girls on the team live near me and we have become really good friends. We have club socials every other week and make an effort to spend time together, it is important for getting new and young people involved in the sport. Since the Swansea Ladies Hockey Club broke through into the English league we have players joining us from all over Wales, it is a diverse mix that works well.
Studying Sports Science has helped me with Hockey. We learn about injury prevention and anatomy, recovery techniques, nutrition and knowing how to train properly, which has all helped me to develop as a player.
I have been playing hockey since I was 14. I started playing for my school and really enjoyed it, my PE teacher encouraged me to develop my game. I started playing for Swansea Ladies Hockey Club soon after and for the County Under 18’s team. The Swansea club have been top of the Welsh Division for the last ten years and now we have moved into the English League. It is extremely competitive and if we finish last we lose our place.
I also play for the University 1st team so I train with them and play a game about once a week. For the Swansea Hockey Club I train twice a week and play a game on Saturday. I try to get a few gym sessions in too.
We train on the new University Astro turf pitches and sometimes we travel to Sofia Gardens in Cardiff. I also get free membership to the Unigym so tend to train there a lot too.
I have a sponsorship deal with Grays, a hockey equipment retailer, and they provide me with sticks and shoes but the rest I have to pay for myself. For the University team and the Swansea Hockey Club I have to pay for my own kit. Unfortunately Ladies Hockey is not as well funded as other sports.
I played two games for Swansea Senior Women’s team, which was great as I’m actually quite young to be playing at that level. I am focussing now on breaking into the Under 21’s for the European 1st division. We won the 2nd division last year, which means we are qualified for as year. The selections for the team going to train in Italy are talking place soon, so I will be training hard to be picked for that.
I am sponsored by Grays for kit. I have significant costs for playing hockey including travel and accommodation expenses plus club membership fees of £250 a year. The sporting scholarship will really help me, especially as a full-time student.
My coach and my club are based here, and I am from Swansea. I liked the Sports Science course and the training facilities were a real bonus.
I really like living in Swansea. I like the social scene and all of the exciting changes that are happening in the town centre and the Maritime quarter. I love being so close to the Gower for surfing and other outdoor activities. I like being able to go to Cardiff in an hour. Generally there is always something going on in Swansea, it’s a young place.
I would like to play hockey at a senior level to a high standard and continue wirnning competititons. I would also like to participate in some other sports such as snowboarding. In my spare time I take disabled and disadvantaged children and adults on trips to do outdoor pursuits. I think I would like to do something along those lines in the future when I can't play hockey competitively.

The scholarship has helped me to pay for all the little costs that mount up. For example, for each away game I play I have to spend £10 and I was just really pleased to be awarded it. I though that maybe coming from Swansea would be a disadvantage, that the scholarships were there to attract students from around the country who would be living away from home. I appreciate the money and the sentiment.
