Sport: Surf life saving

Where are you from?: Cornwall

School: Penair school for my GCSE’s and Truro College for A.levels

How long have you been participating in your sport?2 years.  However I was competing nationally in athletics and cross country prior to this for 5 years I also have a regional swimming background.

What facilities/kit do you use?My training is based in the swimming pool all year round however in the summer my training is more beach based. I run throughout the year combining speed training and middle distance.

There are two sides to my sport, the ocean/beach events and then the pool events. All disciplines traditionally reflected various life-saving techniques, however over the year’s life-saving has been transformed into an exceptionally competitive sport world wide.  In the pool I use equipment such as rescue tubes, manikins and fibre glass fins are used.  My fins cost me around £200. In the ocean various surf craft is used such as surf skis, and paddle boards.  Surf Craft can vary in prize depending on whether it is new or second hand.  My racing board cost me £1000 new excluding the shipping costs from Australia.  Various kit is required such as fast skin or other forms of speed suits which range from £100-£200 for the pool events and different wet suits for on the beach.  I get all my wetsuits from ‘Snugg’, they are custom made and they come in different styles for the different ocean events.

What is your highest achievement in sport?
In Surf life-saving I hold 2 British records, won two bronze medals in the pool at the Junior European championships in France this summer, and achieved two 4ths on the beach.  I was also selected to compete for GB in the Senior European team in Tenerife earlier this year where I broke a junior British record in the pool and was a finalist in both pool and beach events.  This year I won the 2k beach run at our senior national champs and also several pool titles.

Why did you choose to come to Swansea?
I chose Swansea due to the excellent sports facilities; I have everything I could ever need for my sport all in one place; the swimming pool, the beach, the athletics track and a gym.  The university stood out from my other options it just ticked all the boxes, not only does it have amazing sports but also great night life, for when I have some free time!

What makes Swansea a good place to train/practice?
My training Partner/ Best friend also received a sports scholarship and studies here at Swansea University.  To be able to continue training with each other with the support of good coaches in such outstanding sporting facilities, for me makes Swansea an awesome place to train.

What is your ambition for the future?
I would like to remain in the senior Great Britain team for many more years and medal at both Europeans and Worlds at senior level. The 2010 World Championships are been held On Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, this is my home soil, my local area.  A National bid to build a 50m Olympic sized swimming pool on the beach was recently won, so that beach, ocean and pool events can run along side each other at the same venue.  To be a member of the British team in 3 years time and compete in front of a home crowd with 78 other nations would me absolutely amazing.  That is my ambition for the future!

What support do you get from the university to combine study and training?
The university has been really helpful so far.  My tutors and the AU compromise and see both my studies and my sport as equals.  This makes my life a lot easier leaving me to cope on the task in hand.

Which sporting figures do you most admire?Kelly Holmes has always been one of the main figures of inspiration for me, her determination to succeed despite the many unfortunate circumstances which made her sporting career a struggle at time, is a quality which should inspire any young athlete.  And the success which she achieved through perseverance and hard work is any competitors dream.   In my sport I admire particular teams; the Italian and Australian Surf Life-saving team are strong, fearless and fast. Everything I hope to be.
